Skyrenu is contributing to a project on Nordic geopolymers to support the decarbonization of construction

Skyrenu is happy to contribute to the project "Nordic geopolymers for a decarbonized circular economy", led by COALIA, with the participation of the University of Ottawa, the City of Quebec, and the Cree community of Wemindji. Skyrenu is represented there by Marc-Antoine LacroixThe project is presented by COALIA as an initiative carried out between 2025 and 2027, with funding from $125 000.

This collaboration is part of a concrete decarbonization approach applied to the construction sector in a northern context. In Wemindji, climatic, logistical, and energy realities make construction more complex. The project aims to explore lower-carbon materials, better suited to the local environment and capable of integrating into a circular economy model.

The approach is based on the development of geopolymers Made from regional industrial and mining waste, COALIA explains that these materials could represent an alternative to conventional cement, while paving the way for new, more efficient construction practices better suited to the North. Additive manufacturing is also among the avenues being explored to reduce material volumes, certain transportation needs, and improve the overall efficiency of projects.

One of the most interesting aspects of the project is the desire to functionalize materials so that they can capture CO₂In this context, Skyrenu will leverage its expertise to to test the ability of these materials to capture CO₂ under real-world conditionsThis contribution is fully aligned with our positioning: developing and applying low-concentration CO₂ capture solutions in concrete industrial contexts.

For Skyrenu, this type of collaboration is important because it connects several key dimensions of decarbonization: materials innovation, experimental validation, field integration, and deployment potential. Beyond research, it's about advancing solutions that can be evaluated based on their technical robustness, economic viability, and ability to integrate into real-world value chains.

This project also reflects a strong conviction: decarbonization will not progress solely through announcements or concepts, but through robust partnerships between science, industry, and local communities. When complementary expertise converges around a genuine need, it becomes possible to transform local resources, environmental constraints, and climate objectives into concrete solutions.
