Quebec lays the groundwork for geological carbon storage

Even with ambitious climate policies, some emissions will remain difficult to eliminate. Heavy industry, agriculture, and aviation will continue to generate residual emissions in Quebec.
Achieving carbon neutrality will therefore require not only reducing emissions, but also sustainably removing CO₂ from the atmosphere or from diluted industrial flows.
In this context, Bill 17 represents a structuring step forward for Quebec's climate economy.
By establishing a framework for geological carbon storage, Quebec is creating the conditions necessary for the development of a complete industrial value chain around CO₂ capture and sequestration.
A key infrastructure for carbon capture
Geological storage is an essential link in the deployment of carbon capture technologies.
Without permanent storage capacity, capture systems — whether direct capture from the air or capture from low-concentration industrial flows — cannot be deployed on a large scale.

In this context, Skyrenu and Gabriel Vezina co-signed an opinion piece with several leaders of the ecosystem — Alex Petre, Frederic Lalonde, Sophie Forest, Alain Lemieux, Claude Letourneau, Isabelle Dessureault, Grégoire Baillargeon and Michael Denham — in order to support the responsible development of these solutions in Quebec.
This mobilization reflects a shared conviction: the climate transition will require a complete industrial infrastructure for carbon management, including capture, transport and storage.
